Today we did the 285-mile run from Kamloops which is in a semi-arid desert into Vancouver. The first 100 miles or so were through the dry landscape, where rainfall is only 25cm per year. It was truly remarkable scenery and we were seeing eagles and long-horned sheep throughout that stretch. Here are a few highlights … More Photo essay: Rocky Mountaineer Day 2

Another kind of autumn…

31/08/2016

Cue Earth, Wind and Fire. Start digging out the knee-high, brown suede boots. Think about ordering logs for the wood burner, and sourcing those warming, home made soup recipes. Those are the kind of things I’ve always thought about at this time of year. But I only realised the other day that, for the first time … More Another kind of autumn…

It’s a big world out there …

03/03/2016

According to the UN, there are 206 countries listed in the world. 16 of these states are disputed by someone or other, so that leaves 190 ‘official’ countries. So how do you choose which places to visit when planning a round the world trip? Well, for us, it was relatively easy and this is how the logic … More It’s a big world out there …

Over 30 years in the making …

19/02/2016

I had become friends with an Irish couple who moved to Jerusalem with his job as a mechanic in the UN. I went over for the Christmas and New Year period. Jerusalem is one of the most fascinating places I’ve ever been. So much history crammed into such a small spot. And, although I’m not … More Over 30 years in the making …
